We could sure use a good model of one of these...

As you can see, this one is broken. There are also a few other broken ones. 

But more importantly, if we have a model in Inventor, we can print new ones anytime one of them breaks.

A New Challenge!

Upon successful completion of the door lock challenge, Mr Taylor has offered up a new challenge for us.

The plaque shown here is from outside one of the classrooms at school. It turns out that the company that makes them charges an arm and a leg for one of them (although when bought in bulk they are cheaper). So the challenge is to reverse engineer this design and create a plaque for room 203.

A Challenge!

This is one of the doors on the front of the school. 


See how the part where you push it open is taped? Seems like a waste of tape to keep doing that every day. Can you think of a way to lock it in that position without taping it?

Hall Pass Project: Steps 1-3

Step 1 in our design process is to clearly define the problem. I think this is a good start and I like that it's labeled, but can you tell what's missing? Let me know in the comments if you notice it.

Step 2 is all about generating concepts (Brainstorming!). I like how this group is not afraid to write down some wild ideas. Always remember, sometimes those lead to the most important breakthroughs. Not sure if telepathy will work, but what does it make you think about?

Step 3 is where you develop your group's solution. Research plays a big part in this step. What does the user want/need? Can you make it better for them? Can you make it cheaper, more efficient, cooler?


 I like that this one is labeled clearly. Great work. But can you make a suggestion for what else they should include as part of step 3? Let me know in the comments.

A New Problem!

Design Brief

Client:
Matt Owen

Target Consumer:
Lusher students and teachers

Problem Statement:
It is often disruptive to have students leaving class in the middle of a lesson. However, there are circumstances in which students must leave the room, and the teacher needs to know about it.

Criteria:
Easy to use for both students and teachers
Clearly provides relevant information to both students and teachers

Constraints:
Cannot cost more than $10 to produce (plastic is free)

Timeline:

We need to have a final design to the client by _______________. Therefore, initial prototypes will need to be ready for testing by _________________________.

Too much support can be a bad thing!

So, I was trying to print this thing on our Afinia 3D printer.

I knew it'd need some supports, but my first attempt included too much support and I wasn't able to get it all removed without damaging the object.


So, on attempt number two I used very few supports and it came out much better.
